About Protective Strategies

Protective Strategies is a Canadian training and consulting company founded by Randy LaHaie in 1994. The business was created to provide practical, experience-based solutions for improving safety, reducing liability, and preparing individuals and organizations for real-world challenges.

Randy began teaching nearly 50 years ago as a martial arts and self-defence instructor, and transitioned to law enforcement training when he entered his police career; spending many years as a Police Academy instructor and program manager of the agency’s Officer Safety Unit. Over the past four decades, he has developed and delivered specialized programs to professionals across Canada. He founded Protective Strategies to formalize and expand these efforts, bringing a consistent, principled approach to high-stakes training environments.

Since its inception, Protective Strategies has delivered training to thousands of participants—spanning law enforcement, government agencies, corporate employees, and private individuals. Programs have been delivered at public and private training initiatives across Canada, with involvement in U.S.-based events, conferences, and multi-agency courses.
Randy has been declared a subject matter expert in judicial proceedings, consulted on criminal and civil investigations, and served as an instructor-trainer, certifying and recertifying other instructors in use-of-force, officer safety, and related disciplines.

What distinguishes Protective Strategies is its use of the Liability Reduction Model—a foundational framework that guides the development, validation, and delivery of all training and consulting services. This model ensures that PS programs are not just well-intentioned, but legally defensible, operationally sound, and practically effective in high-consequence environments.

While the company’s roots are in officer safety and use-of-force instruction, Protective Strategies has evolved into a broader platform that integrates consulting, instructor training, and customized risk mitigation strategies. Its network also includes a select group of subject matter experts who contribute specialized knowledge to PS-led initiatives.
